STAR OF THE SHOW

DAY 19 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

As I was leaving the grocery store today these flowers caught my eye.  The entire display was suffering from the terrible heat we've been having.  I'd have watered them if I could have, but guess they would think I'm crazy.  Anyway, these flowers were still hanging in there so I took a couple of pictures and came home and painted them.  At least they're immortalized if they don't make it.  They were fun to paint and not nearly as complicated as I'd thought they might be.  One just never knows!

A ROSE FOR YOU

A red rose from my garden that I hope you all will enjoy.  The 30 paintings in 30 days really is a stretch, but I think I'll make it.  This is DAY 18 and I tried to do a painting that was a little easier than yesterday's effort.  Of course this took longer than I had planned, but not as long as yesterday's.

Working with reds can be tricky and I found everything was getting a little dull so I wiped off the more critical areas and went in with some brighter red which I think did the trick?  Having been a watercolorist for so many years, I feel like I'm "cheating" when I do this but then this is one of the advantages of oil--it's flexibility!

Happy Painting to those of you who are also doing Leslie's Challenge!  And thanks to all who took the time to view my blog...

HIBISCUS DELIGHT

DAY 16 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

This hibiscus was painted from a photo I took of the flowers at the San Diego Zoo.  I know, I took some animal pictures too, but these hibiscus really caught my eye!!  They were the most unusual ones I had ever seen and they were huge!!!  They were growing near where the Flamingos are kept (in case you are ever there and want to see them.    This was definitely a challenge (for the challenge) and I'm happy with it for my first attempt.  I'd decided to try it as I finally had a day free to paint and I ended up spending most of the day doing the painting.  Something easier tomorrow, please!

I tend not to like the grain of the canvas to show through so have found adding a layer or two of gesso on most canvases seems to help--sand after each one for some tooth.

POPPY SHADOWS

I painted this from my photo once before (and may try again) and found the shadows very challenging so thought I would try again.  Shadows are so much harder than one would think--particularly on a surface that lets the sun shine through.  The only way we ever get these things right is to keep trying---and trying!

HERE I AM (Orange Iris)

I finally got my 6 x 6 canvases so thought it would be fun to do an iris close-up and personal.  The smallest I had been working recently had been 5 x 7 (which is actually smaller in square inches by l) but somehow because of the landscape format they seemed larger.  6 x 6's are interesting to work on and I enjoyed doing this one.   I don't know the proper name of this iris as I took the photo elsewhere.

BRUGMANSIA (Angel's Trumpet)

DAY 14 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

I just finished a waterlily picture from the Mission in San Juan Capistrano so was into the file on flowers from the Mission.  The Trumpet flowers are so beautiful and the Mission has two trees of them.  These are of the Brugmansia family and are very poisonous and also very beautiful.  They are also called the upside-down flowers, topsy turvy flowers and Angel's Trumpet.

Thanks for taking the time to view my Blog....

CACTUS FLOWER

DAY 12 OF THE 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE BY LESLIE SAETA

Wow!  This truly is getting challenging!  Fortunately I have lots of flower pictures on my iPad to choose from, but it is getting more difficult to select one--and there's more than half the month to go.
I  originally chose flowers as my theme so am enjoying doing these little paintings!

FRIED EGG FLOWER

DAY 11 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

This was such fun to paint.  I'd always been intimidated by all the wrinkles in the petals, but they were not that difficult to define.  The flower is actually called a Matilija Poppy and it is amazing to watch it bloom as all those petals come out of a tiny round ball and of course that is what causes them to have all the wrinkles.  The longer they are out the straighter they become.

PANSY FACE

                 LESLIE SAETA'S 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE--DAY 9

Just a simple little pansy showing its lovely face.  They're all lovely (pansies) and more of a challenge to paint than one would think.  While doing this challenge I find myself getting close to falling behind and so I pick a painting that I think will be easier than some of the others.  Not so in this case.  Oh well, I was up late!

SUNFLOWER GAZE

DAY 8 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

I know, I do paint a lot of Sunflowers!  However, they are fun to paint and I've recently discovered how much fun it is to paint them with a palette knife.  If you haven't tried using a palette knife yet, I highly recommend it.  You can get such beautiful, clean color and lots of texture.  To get into tiny areas, just load the color on the knife and then wipe away all but the size of the area you are trying to cover...It's really fun to experiment with.  Hope you enjoy!

POPPY PARADE

DAY 7 OF LESLIE SAETA'S 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

I did these poppies with palette knife and tried to make them looser than some previous poppy paintings I've done.  Not sure if it worked or not but must get it out there for the challenge.  I just listened to Leslie interview Elizabeth Pollie on blog talk radio and Elizabeth says she does a lot of scraping and re-arranging.  I tried a little of that on this painting and will try to remember to do more of it.  I know occasionally I have done a passage in a painting that hasn't worked and I've gotten frustrated and just wiped it off.  Sometimes it can leave magical paint behind.  Now I shall have to remember to do it even if the area hasn't completely frustrated me.  I know it won't always work and that's what scares me.  Oh well, as Robert E. Wood used to say "it isn't precious!"

LESLIE SAETA'S 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS CHALLENGE

I do love painting iris!  At this point I don't know the name of this particular one, but it has always been a beauty in my garden.  I used to have lots of irises until we decided to move them and they didn't like the move so well.  This is one that came through it all with flying colors.  Hope you like it as much as I do.

ROSE BEAUTY

DAY 4 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 IN 30 CHALLENGE

I decided to paint a rose for the challenge today.  This rose is called "Dianna, Princess of Wales" and has always out-performed itself until this year. ( This is a photo from last year.)  Last winter we decided to have some drainage work done in the rose garden so all the roses were taken up a little earlier than the actual bare root time.  When we re-planted them all but one came back, but several of them are suffering and Dianna is one of them.  My only hope is that by next summer they will have fully made a comeback.  Fortunately I have quite a few pictures of the roses when they were all healthy.

Thanks for looking,

Lori

IRIS DREAM

DAY THREE OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 IN 30 CHALLENGE

This is one of the purple irises that was very prolific in my iris garden.  I guess purple irises are among the strongest.  Seems they are traditional when one thinks of iris.  I painted iris in watercolor for many years and was kind of known at Art A Fair as the "iris lady" (along with Iris Adams).
I tried taking the  picture of this with my iPhone camera and it turned out very badly.  I kept working with the adjustments and it still looked awful.  So, I switched to my good old faithful Cannon and it came out perfectly the first time.  I seems my paintings don't translate well with the iPhone???  Don't know why but the color just comes out strangely.

CALLALILY FRIENDS

SHOULD HAVE BEEN DAY TWO ON THE 30 IN 30 CHALLENGE

I entered this yesterday in the Leslie Saeta 30 painting in 30 days challenge, but I messed up somehow and up with the Google word in my box???  I'll try again today as it is impossible to get rid of a flub (at least I don't know how) on the challenge.  Soooo, since I've still done a painting each day and have another one to enter, it will have to post tomorrow.

These are callalilies from my yard.  They grow in various places and are not to be deterred.  I tried to get rid of them in one spot, but they came back anyway.  I do love them when they are blooming, but they can be quite "unbeautiful" when they are not as they are tall and rangy.

The cherries inspired this painting.  They are in season right now and are such fat, juicy ones.  Who
can resist--either to paint or to eat--or both which was true in my case.  The painting is done entirely with a palette knife.  I wasn't sureI could accomplish the cherries that way, but I think they look pretty good!  Hope you like them!

I recently walked to this beach from Pacific Coast Hwy and Victoria Street to see the tower I had long heard about.  Getting there is not easy and I can't imagine trying to haul all my painting gear there.  Also the tide comes in and I've heard of painter's being trapped there--that wouldn't be fun!!!  Anyway, I walked from PCH to the beach.  It was beautiful and the tower is worth seeing.  I got some good photographs to work from.

HAPPY FIREPLUG - SOLD

I was parked waiting for my husband to come out of the auto repair where we had taken our van to be serviced.  This fireplug caught my eye with its bright orange color so I took some photos.  As I was doing that Bill came out along with the Manager of the repair shop.  He asked why I was taking photos of a fireplug and I said I was going to paint it.  Of course he didn't know I was an artist and he looked quite worried.  I finally told him I was going to do a painting of it--not paint the actual fireplug!

TWO DAISIES

This is a painting of a bouquet given to me by a friend in thanks for my taking care of her kitties while she was out of town.  It differs a little bit from the original bouquet because the one white flower in the bouquet was some kind of Queen Anne's Lace, but it didn't last long enough for me to paint it.  Instead I had to put in a little white Daisy.  The Gerbera Daisy was original.  The purple flowers resembled violets but were some other kind of flower of which I don't know the name.

I know this looks familiar as it is from my previous painting "A Quiet Day in Laguna".  I used that painting as a study to do this larger one which is 16 x 20.  I wanted to make the flowers more a part of the picture as the plantings along the bluff are always perfect.  This takes me where I like to be....

COPPER PLATED PEARS

I'm in the process of starting to prepare for my summer painting classes at Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach.  I primarily teach palette knife work with an underpainting done with brushes and this is done to establish your value pattern (pattern of lights and darks).  Palette knife is such fun because the color stays so clean and it can almost be sculpted when you have enough paint on the canvas.  I'll be teaching on Tuesdays.  The first class will be July 1st.  For information, call 714-271-1135 or to make a reservation, call 949-494-4514.

QUIET DAY IN LAGUNA

I just re-posted this after discovering my mistakes.  The sand in the closer coves was too white and I wanted the focal point to be out at the far beach.  Hopefully this accomplished the task.  Anyway, this is at Treasure Island at the Montage Hotel in So. Laguna Beach.  It is a beautiful place and the walkway along the bluffs is always gorgeous.  The water changes every day depending on the weather.  It can be very peaceful but on weekends and Holidays it gets very busy.  Parking is the worst problem.  To get there, take Pacific Coast Highway through the busy park of Laguna and continue on for about a mile? until you come to a street called Wesley.  Make a right and go down the driveway to a small garage where there is paid parking-- People are always coming and going so if you wait long enough a spot will turn up.

More of my Nasturtiums that I simply put in a little white pot.  Their colors are so vibrant that they can almost light up a room.  They actually last quite a while so make it somewhat easier to paint them.  I enjoyed using a different palette this time getting into the golds and browns.  I like it and think I will incorporate those colors more frequently.

PURPLES AND WHITES

The bank out in front of our home is covered with these African Daisies.  They bloom their hearts out this time of year and really serve to beautify the entrance to our home.  I'd never painted them before but in my search for subject matter I thought they would make a pretty grouping.  Hope you agree.

I've been working at loosening up my brushstrokes and was pleased with the effort on this one.  For those of you who paint,  don't skip the preliminaries of at least working out a thumb nail value sketch and make sure you join the light middle values with the same and the darker middle values with the same.  Then add a small amount of the lightest light and darkest dark values.  Don't forget to consider the focal area.   I know we are always eager to jump right in and paint, but every time I do I end up having to work out problems that I could have avoided by pre-planning.

DAISIES IN BLUE

I just planted a small daisy plant out among my roses.  I had purchased the plant a year ago at Trader Joe's and it survived in it's little pot for almost a year, but it was looking poorly.  In just one short week after re-planting it has revived but not to the extent of the daisies in my painting.  However, that little plant was the inspiration.   I have to admit, I cheated.  I bought some silk daisies at Michaels for more inspiration.  Actually using silk flowers was kind of nice as they didn't die on me,  but the real thing is always more beautiful.  The blue jar is one of the Ball canning jars.

FLORAL TEAPOT-SOLD

This is another attempt at painting my recently re-discovered copper teapot.  I wish my Mom who gave it to me was here to see my paintings of the teapot.  The year she gave the teapot to me I had unknowingly just purchased another copper teapot right before Christmas.  It wasn't as nice as hers, but it did kind of take away from her surprise.  She should know her teapot has long outlived the other one and has become lots of fun to paint.  The flowers are from Trader Joe's and the cream pitcher was from Avon long ago.

COPPER AND CREAM

The copper teapot had been hidden away in a cupboard until I stumbled upon it the other day.  I really enjoy painting copper so was delighted to find it.  My Mother gave it to me for Christmas a number of years ago and it had kind of sunk into oblivion since I drink coffee instead of tea and of course the microwave is the best way to heat the water in a hurry.

I have been side-tracked recently doing some mixed media acrylic work and it felt so good to get back to my oils.  I've been striving for a looser look in my painting and am hopeful that I am off in the right direction--finally!

WE'RE A COUPLE

These lilies were part of a bouquet I found at Trader Joe's.  They seemed to belong together even though they were on different stems (sort of like people?).  The jar is a Ball canning jar that I found at Stater Brothers.  In Dreama Tolle Perry's blog,  she often paints blue canning jars in her beautiful paintings and I was so happy to find some (had to buy six).  So, if I break one or two I'll still be set!  This was painted with a combination of brush and palette knife.

SUNFLOWER EXPLOSION

I've always loved painting sunflowers and they seem particularly conducive to palette knife painting.  This one has lots of nice juicy texture.  As a suggestion to any oil painters out there, palette knife painting helps separate us from photographers even more because of the texture we can create.  Lots of fun!!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We had 10 guests so it was a lot of work, but fortunately everything came off very well.  My son deep fries the turkey and it was yummy!  We were supposed to have rain, but we got lucky and it waited until early this morning.

GREEN PASTURES - SOLD

My painting of the horses is from a Challenge offered by Lee Brown Photography and I have to thank him for offering up such a lovely photo to work from.  I basically used the photo with a few changes to the background (left out the fence) and I changed the horses legs slightly.  I owned horses for most of my life and painted them a lot during one period.  They remain a true love for me and painting them is a a treat!  For a time we had a large area of our property in green pasture and it always did my heart good to see the horses out there grazing.  This scene is idyllic.

SOLO SUNFLOWER

This is a re-work.  I previously had painted the background with too much blue.  By lightening it up it became a warmer more inviting image.  Of course when you change one thing it always requires changing another so the shadow was too blue and had  to be lightened.  I'm now pleased with the final image as it feels warmer and more inviting.
If you are a painter don't hesitate to re-work images that don't quite seem right to you.  You can rub a layer of Liquin on the dry painting to restore the colors and to make the surface more accepting of the new paint.

DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES

I finished this last weekend, but just got around to posting it.  I'm doing a workshop with JOHN COSBY.   Have only done the first day, but it seems he is a wonderful teacher.

The rose actually is a Diana, Princess of Wales rose.  It is quite lovely and I enjoy it so much.  It does make me sad when I think of how much Diana would have contributed to the lives of her children, family and country had she been allowed to live.  The glass jar is actually a Ball jar, but to put the name on the front would have made it busier than I preferred.

Hope you are all having a wonderful week.  I feel truly blessed to be taking  this workshop and to be able to paint at the beach every day!!
