ASIAN COLLECTION

While looking in my hall closet for a certain tablecloth, I came upon a "smallish" plastic bag with a twist-tie on it.  I had no idea what was in it as it had been hidden there for "centuries".  When I opened it this Oriental silk scarf plus two others were the treasures I found.  They are all so gorgeous and very frail so I carefully spread this one out and walked around the house trying to figure out what to use to complement the scarf.   The silver pitcher seemed a no-brainer and then I decided to add one of the cups from our Rooster china.

My parents-in-law were in the service stationed in China in the early 1920's and brought home lots of wondrous treasures.

Thanks for looking.  Hope you are having fun painting or whatever you love to do.....

SQUASHED

I think this squash is called a "Snow Cap" which would make sense.  For a squash it is really amazing.  I added in a tube of the orangish paint that was used in its making.  Lots of fun!!
The name is meaningful.....

IRIS VIEW

A fancy iris to add to the collection.  This one was definitely a challenge (I seem to be saying that a lot lately!) and I had never dared to try it.  So, I guess my skills are improving as I am actually happy with it.  I used to have a lot of this iris but they are all gone....I loved them for their feminine little white edging and gorgeous purple falls.  Another of nature's wonders.

SQUASH SERIES #1

I've always been intrigued by the variety of fancy squash that we see in markets this time of year.  Thought I would paint a few of them just for fun.  This is the first of the series and I finished the 2nd today which I will post in a day or two.  The patterns and shapes of the various squash are all amazing.  I just wonder how they are hybridized?

TRICK OR TREAT

We call her our Halloween Witch and we've had her ever since our children were little.  She hangs around in the Hutch all year waiting to be let our for Halloween.  She has her Trick or Treat bag and would be happy to have you contribute!  I was all ready to post her when I realized I had forgotten her whiskers.  Just a small detail but they do add to her character...  Anyway, she's ready for Halloween....

CIGARETTE KEEPER

This little red cup came from China in the early 1920's.  We inherited it from my husband's parents who were stationed in China with the Navy at that time.  It was designed to hold cigarettes and worked well for them until they came out with filtered cigarettes which no longer fit.  Fortunately by that time they had quit smoking anyway.  I just plopped a pear on top and was good to go....

Enjoy (now I get to eat the pear)!

A PAIR OF DAISIES

Going from just flowers to a still life with flowers in it.  That involves a little more planning in terms of composition and color harmony.  I find I really do need to do some thumbnails when I do these even though they look simple.  Also working with shadows is more challenging than I always think it will be.   I'm happy when they make me happy....

Happy Painting or whatever else you like to do---

IRIS VISION

I did this painting earlier in the summer.  I saw this iris a few years ago while on a workshop in Valyermo, CA. The workshop was held at St. Andrews Abby which is where Benedictine Monks live and worship.  The Abbey was like a small oasis in the desert, with a beautiful pond at its center and a large grove of trees off to the eastside.  We were expected to follow the rules of the Monks and were not supposed to speak during certain evening hours and we could not talk at meals.  Quite different, but interesting!  The reason I told you all this is because they had beautiful iris plantings and a few were blooming while we were there and of course this was one of them.  It was a nice experience...

Thanks for looking!

EPIPHYLLUM

This palette knife painting was done during the summer while I was doing Art A Fair in Laguna Beach, CA.  I really enjoyed doing it and working at getting the warms and cools right.  The flowers of an epiphyllum plant are so pretty, but the plant itself is rather awkward and ungainly (at least mine are).  We only have two left, but my father-in-law had many of them.  They were all out sitting on top of his block wall that lined the property in their backyard.  They were quite a sight to see when they were all blooming.
