SUNFLOWER EXPLOSION
I've always loved painting sunflowers and they seem particularly conducive to palette knife painting. This one has lots of nice juicy texture. As a suggestion to any oil painters out there, palette knife painting helps separate us from photographers even more because of the texture we can create. Lots of fun!!!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had 10 guests so it was a lot of work, but fortunately everything came off very well. My son deep fries the turkey and it was yummy! We were supposed to have rain, but we got lucky and it waited until early this morning.

GREEN PASTURES - SOLD
My painting of the horses is from a Challenge offered by Lee Brown Photography and I have to thank him for offering up such a lovely photo to work from. I basically used the photo with a few changes to the background (left out the fence) and I changed the horses legs slightly. I owned horses for most of my life and painted them a lot during one period. They remain a true love for me and painting them is a a treat! For a time we had a large area of our property in green pasture and it always did my heart good to see the horses out there grazing. This scene is idyllic.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my blog!

SOLO SUNFLOWER
This is a re-work. I previously had painted the background with too much blue. By lightening it up it became a warmer more inviting image. Of course when you change one thing it always requires changing another so the shadow was too blue and had to be lightened. I'm now pleased with the final image as it feels warmer and more inviting.
If you are a painter don't hesitate to re-work images that don't quite seem right to you. You can rub a layer of Liquin on the dry painting to restore the colors and to make the surface more accepting of the new paint.

DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES
I finished this last weekend, but just got around to posting it. I'm doing a workshop with JOHN COSBY. Have only done the first day, but it seems he is a wonderful teacher.
The rose actually is a Diana, Princess of Wales rose. It is quite lovely and I enjoy it so much. It does make me sad when I think of how much Diana would have contributed to the lives of her children, family and country had she been allowed to live. The glass jar is actually a Ball jar, but to put the name on the front would have made it busier than I preferred.
Hope you are all having a wonderful week. I feel truly blessed to be taking this workshop and to be able to paint at the beach every day!!

MONSOON WEATHER
DAY 30 OF THE 30 IN 30 LESLIE SAETA CHALLENGE--(To be honest I only painted 28 paintings due to technical difficulties in the beginning)
I painted this from a photograph that I took a couple of years ago. We were staying in Scottsdale where they have the loveliest skies. I wish we still went over there so I could take more photos of the sunsets!
I used to do a show over there that lasted for about 3 months, but I was doing mostly floral watercolors at that time so I didn't take advantage of all the photo opportunities. Oh well, we occasionally have beautiful skies here in So. Cal so I'll try to take advantage of them.
The Challenge has been a wonderful opportunity. I found it very motivating to get up and get to painting so now I almost have enough paintings to fill my small bins for the Art A Fair show next summer--however, I'll be doing lots more.

NATURE'S NYMPH
DAY 29 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 IN 30 CHALLENGE---
This is a very old bud vase that has been in my family for as long as I can remember. I remember as a child thinking it was very "racy". She (the nymph) actually has a very filmy gown on but it is barely visible. Anyway I always liked the "natural-ness" of it. (Sorry about that word but couldn't think of another way to put it.) It was a challenge to paint, but I rather liked the way it came out. This one took a lot of time so I am behind the eight-ball to get another painting done for the last day of the Leslie Saeta 30 paintings in 30 days completed. It has been a race, but well worth it!

CORK IN THE BOTTLE
This painting was done just because of the cork. This is the bottle my son found up in the hills behind our home many years ago. Maybe it was a soda bottle or a booze bottle, but it must be pretty old to have a cork in it. Doesn't really look like a wine bottle??? Who knows, at any rate I've enjoyed having it and now painting it....

CARDS FOR SALE?
Cats seem to find the most unusual places to sleep. This basket was sitting in my workroom left over from when I had note cards to sell at some shows. Our cat, Rocky, decided to take advantage of it recently and I found him curled up and sleeping like only cats can do. He has such unusual coloration that I've rarely painted him, but since I'm running out of ideas after having done a painting a day for so long, this seemed like a fun thing to try.

WHITE ON WHITE - SOLD
DAY 24 OF THE CHALLENGE BY LESLIE SAETA-- I offered myself a challenge of basically painting white on white. It was difficult and not a lot of fun but at least it is recognizable as a white rose in a white hobnail vase on a white cloth (avoiding all color except for the greens).

TREASURES
I found the cream pitcher at an antique store in downtown Orange recently and the vase came from one of our families. I guess they were once somebody's "treasure" but got passed on in one way or another. I did a proximity of the pitcher once before but have never painted the bud vase before (always thought it would be too difficult). Trying to find something different to paint every day has caused me to branch out and try new things.

I've done several painting of my roses that are named after the actor Henry Fonda. They are just the most beautiful yellow and they always offer a "challenge". This painting is a little larger than the 6 x 6's I've been painting and it was great to be able to "stretch out" a little. Hope you enjoy.

ROSES AND COPPER-Sold
DAY 16---------
Well, we are now more than halfway through the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. It has been quite all-consuming. Not just the painting, but the figuring out what to paint, then doing a Notan and a value study, then painting, clean-up, photograph and uploading to this site and the Leslie Saeta blog sitel I don't know how Leslie does it with moving into her new Ventura Beach digs and all that goes along with that.
Anyway, these roses are called Floral Scent and I've painted them before. I have trouble getting the correct color on my iPhone, so am now back to using my Cannon. The "vase" is a glass with the Desert Rose pattern on it, but including that was going to make the painting too busy so it will have to wait for another time. I'm finding painting roses to be quite a challenge, but think I'm getting the hang of it.

CHINA COVE STUDY - SOLD
Another painting from our trip up north to Pt. Lobos Nat'l. Park. The area at the end of the park is called China Cove and is truly beautiful. The water is tropical looking and the hole in the rock (upper left) is almost like a cave unless you see it from the right angle. I painted this one with palette knife. The painting I did previously of China Cove was also with palette knife which seems to work well with rocks and water. I find that with palette knife I am able to get more paint down without disturbing the underlayers of paint so the color is cleaner. I hope to learn to do this with a brush--something more to strive for...

ORANGES AND COPPER
I tried to set this image so it would automatically post at 5 am this morning, but must have done something wrong as it didn't happen. When I just now checked in at 8 am it was still yesterday's post showing? Ah, this technology stuff is driving me crazy! I will persevere however...
The copper pot came back with me from France many long years ago and the bottle was found by my son, Dale, up in the hills behind our house. It actually has a rotted cork inside of it and appears to be quite old. I like painting still lifes, but what seems to take the most time for me is figuring out just what to paint and how I want it put together? I've heard it is the same for other painters, too. Seems it should be simple--just gather a few things you love together and start to paint, but it seems to be a lot more time-consuming.

SUNSET
DAY 10 OF THE 30-DAY PAINTING A DAY CHALLENGE
Sunsets are so much fun to paint! It's always a challenge to get the brilliance of the sun. It seems to happen when everything else is grayed down and there is a lot of value contrast. I'm still trying to keep up with the Leslie Saeta 30-day challenge although I do have other challenges on the computer. I can never seem to find the challenge for the next day. It should be in my email, but doesn't seem to be. Wish I was more technically inclined! Right now I'm trying to set up "Square" to enable taking credit cards and Apple won't even accept my password. PEACEFUL MORNING
Another painting from a recent trip to the beach at Laguna. The clouds were lovely--kind of "scudding" across the sky. The palms were gently swaying in a light breeze and all seemed right with the world. There is nothing like being at the beach, hearing the sound of the waves gently lapping at the shoreline to help one unwind.

ROSE BOUQUET
This painting started as a "disaster" (maybe it still is?). My husband said he liked the single rose and loved the detail. After that it (the rose)became "precious". I had to go back to the words of my wonderful watercolor teacher of long ago, Robert E. Wood. "Nothing is ever precious in your painting, you have to be prepared to wipe it out if it doesn't work even though it may be the most beautiful piece of paint in your painting." So, I didn't wipe it out but did loosen it up a lot and worked the background around it. --Another no, no, as I should have worked it all together. Ah well, I'm happy with it now and hope someone else will be too.

One lone Sandpiper was darting around on the rocks and the beach. Normally I've seen them in groups so I guess he was a loner. I was able to photograph him with the wave behind him since he virtually blended in with the rocks (guess that's done on purpose!). I did one other painting with a group of them feeding on the beach and called it "Suppertime". Decided to just call this one what it is--Sandpiper.

FAMILY FUN
It's DAY 4 of the 30 in 30 CHALLENGE BY LESLIE SAETA. I'm behind by l painting already but am "painting as fast as I can" trying to keep up.
This is a crop of another of my photos taken recently at the beach. It was a lucky day with the weather just perfect and I got lots of good reference material--next best thing to being there. Actually I had to stand on some rock outcroppings to get this shot so it would have been very difficult to set up my easel at this angle. I was envious of the people on the beach, but had to head off to my show so definitely wasn't dressed to go swimming. I'm sure they had a good time.

From a photo I took the other day in Laguna Beach. I walked on the rocks among some tide pools and thoroughly enjoyed digging my toes in the wet sand. LAGUNA GAZEBO
A View of the Gazebo by Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, CA. While doing my show at Art A Fair in Laguna I took an hour to go down to the beach and took some pictures of the gazebo. While I am doing the show it is more important to be at the show (hopefully selling) than out on location painting so I have to be satisfied working from my iPad. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed taking my shoes off and walking in the wet sand. Also got some lovely photographs to work from. DAISY LOVE-SOLD
I've been challenging myself to get a painting done every day that I am at my show, Art A Fair in Laguna Beach, CA. I teach on Tuesdays and take Monday and Wednesday off, so I give myself a break on those days. Sometimes on my teaching day I complete a demo and then will have a painting to post here. The above was my painting yesterday. It is 6 x 6 and the subject is a little pot of daisies that I picked up at Trader Joe's on my way to the show. I love my booth this year. I am right up front where the entertainers are. It can be more than noisy (loud music), but is great fun. Most of the time I can manage to carry on a conversation over the music, but I know there will be times when that will be impossible. Come visit me, I'm in Booth A-28.

ALONG HIGHWAY 1
On a recent trip to No. California we drove from Monterey down to Big Sur. It was a beautiful day and this view was at one of the vista points where we pulled off . Somehow this lovely tree standing by itself and acting as a lonely sentinel has survived.
I will be starting Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach soon and am sending out invitations for opening night as well as passes for the entire summer. If you would like one, please email me with your name and address at-----quartonfineart@yahoo.com. I'll get one off to you right away.
I received some comments that it was illegal to photograph or paint this image? I Googled The Lone Cypress and found dozens of photographs and paintings and comments to the effect that it was OK to photograph and paint it as long as it wasn't a commercial endeavor. If anyone knows more about this, please let me know.......

DOS MANZANOS
I'll be teaching a palette knife painting class this summer at Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach, CA so I'm going to be working on a series of images that will suit all levels of painters. Palette knife painting is so fun since it is somewhat "plastic" in its maneuverability. With so much paint on the canvas it is easier to move edges and change things by scraping off. Come down and give it a try.

INGRID BERGMAN BURGUNDY ROSES
This rosebush was acquired by me by mistake, but has turned out to be one of the best. I went to the nursery and asked for an American Beauty rose (bare root) and was given a plant. I came home and prepared a wonderful spot for it using wire screening (we have moles and gophers) and proceeded to wait for the blooms. It succeeded beautifully in blooming its little heart out. That fall when I pruned it back I got down close to the root ball and looked at the tag and lo and behold it said "Ingrid Bergman". Oh well, they are much like American Beauty and it has continued through the years to perform like a champion. I remember Ingrid Bergman the actress and she was beautiful, too, although much scorned here in the U.S. at that time as she was having an affair with.....help me here, was it Roberto Rosselini?? That goes way back to a different time!!

This imagery came from a photo taken by my daughter. She took the photo from a bike trail. She was on a vacation with her soon to be husband and they had a wonderful time in S. F.
I lived there long ago for a while in Pacific Heights, and later on Nob Hill and then Russian Hill.
I had a view of the Golden Gate from the Russian Hill apartment. Good times!

PIANO CAT-SOLD
Our cat, Rocky, loves to sit on our piano and look out the window--I'm sure he lives to catch sight of a bird or a bunny rabbit. He hasn't done great things for the finish of our piano as he has been doing this for years, but guess that's the price we pay for letting him have some fun. We just placed another table that is lower right in front of the window so we're hoping this will help. Actually, since none of us play the piano I guess it is nice that it has served some purpose through the years. Bill's Mother was a very accomplished pianist and we inherited the piano from her. I'm sure she would roll over in her grave if she knew this was the purpose her piano had been reduced to.

PURE PLEASURE
I called this painting Pure Pleasure as it was a pure pleasure to paint it. I had previously done a smaller study on location called One Duck and shown earlier in my blog. I then used it to enlarge this at the same location (Irvine Park in Orange County, CA). I paint here often and also enjoy going there to walk my dog (a Cairn Terrier).
I was so happy yesterday to hear that I was given a 2nd place award for the painting by the Southern California Plein Air Painters (with a nice cash award).

HENRY FONDA YELLOWS-SOLD
This is another painting of what are rapidly becoming almost my favorite roses. The rosebush is ablaze with yellow. Even at dusk it looks like there is a spotlight on it. Just amazing so how can I resist trying to paint some of them. I put them in my antique sugar bowl and decided to crop the bowl so I could emphasize the roses. The dark background makes them sing, which they almost are anyway.....(I think I can hear them?)

FRESH AS A DAISY-SOLD
These daisies were "rescued" from our Easter bouquet. Daisies are such wonderful, happy flowers and they last such a long time. I liked the contrast of the "mauvish" (I know that isn't a real word) background against the green glass jar and the touch of yellow in the heart of the flowers. It is so easy and almost compelling to get picky with all the petals, but hopefully I avoided that pitfall this time.

FIRST HENRY FONDA
This painting is of my first Henry Fonda rose of the season. They are the most beautiful yellow in the beginning, but their form and color seems to "degrade" as the summer wears on. I must go to a nursery and ask if there is anything I can do to keep them beautiful. The sugar bowl is part of an antique set that was passed down by my Dad's family. This was a most enjoyable painting to do as it kind of "rolled off the brush". Wish they were all that way, but fortunately more and more of them are!

It was a very peaceful afternoon with a few ducks out enjoying the quiet. I decided to include one duck, although he is not very obvious, just for fun. I didn't make him stand out as I didn't want him to be the focal point.

THE BOATHOUSE (Irvine Park)
This is my artist's interpretation of the boathouse at Irvine Park. You can rent a paddle boat and paddle around the lake with the ducks. I remember doing this long ago. Yesterday I was painting with some friends from the Southern Calif. Plein Air Painters group. We couldn't have had a more perfect day. It was great to get out in nature again.

SHY ONE (SUNFLOWERS)-SOLD
I took pictures of these sunflowers in my garden a couple of years ago. I combined the two and liked the idea of one hiding behind the other. The big guy in the front is the "protector". I think I'll try for another "crop" this summer since they are really fun to grow.

LONE PALM
A view from the walkway at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. It was early morning with a slight overcast or marine layer. In most places at the park there are lots of palm trees so this one isolated palm caught my eye.

PRETTY POPPIES - SOLD
These poppies are the first to bloom this year. I spotted them way up in the "back 40" when I was scouting for something to paint. They are such bright, happy flowers and stand up very straight on their stems so can be spotted from afar. Soon there will be many of them--can't wait!

WANNA PAINT - SOLD
My imagination is running rampant!! Teddy is asking someone to come paint with him. I feel the same way sometimes. It's just fun painting the chunky little black and white body of the panda. I recently checked out the panda website on Fine Art America and at least I found out that I wasn't the only one dreaming up activities for the panda. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I haven't completely slipped over the edge.....yet.

I LOVE ORANGES-SOLD
My favorite little teddy bear. I painted him once before in "Wanna Color" and was asked to join a "panda website" on Fine Art America. So, decided to do him again and I have another version coming tomorrow. I like him! He seems such a happy little fellow and why shouldn't he be--he gets to do everything he wants!

QUIET ARRANGEMENT - SOLD
I was tempted to call this painting "14 Hands" which would refer to the bottle that has a horse's head on the label. But, for the sake of composition the horse's head ended up being a mere smudge of a reddish-brown. This was meant to be a loose painting so a very defined horse's head just wouldn't work. However, the horse was original inspiration (and I want to give him/her credit!).
