SUNFLOWER GIRLS #2

This is a part of a series I plan to do of Sunflowers.  I started with #2 as I haven't yet photographed
#1.  These are only 5 x 7 in size so could make a fun grouping.  I've been collecting photos of sunflowers for a long time and thought it would be fun to paint a series of them.

CHERRY JUBILEE

The cherries inspired this painting.  They are in season right now and are such fat, juicy ones.  Who
can resist--either to paint or to eat--or both which was true in my case.  The painting is done entirely with a palette knife.  I wasn't sureI could accomplish the cherries that way, but I think they look pretty good!  Hope you like them!

VICTORIA BEACH TOWER - SOLD

I recently walked to this beach from Pacific Coast Hwy and Victoria Street to see the tower I had long heard about.  Getting there is not easy and I can't imagine trying to haul all my painting gear there.  Also the tide comes in and I've heard of painter's being trapped there--that wouldn't be fun!!!  Anyway, I walked from PCH to the beach.  It was beautiful and the tower is worth seeing.  I got some good photographs to work from.

HAPPY FIREPLUG - SOLD

I was parked waiting for my husband to come out of the auto repair where we had taken our van to be serviced.  This fireplug caught my eye with its bright orange color so I took some photos.  As I was doing that Bill came out along with the Manager of the repair shop.  He asked why I was taking photos of a fireplug and I said I was going to paint it.  Of course he didn't know I was an artist and he looked quite worried.  I finally told him I was going to do a painting of it--not paint the actual fireplug!

TWO DAISIES

This is a painting of a bouquet given to me by a friend in thanks for my taking care of her kitties while she was out of town.  It differs a little bit from the original bouquet because the one white flower in the bouquet was some kind of Queen Anne's Lace, but it didn't last long enough for me to paint it.  Instead I had to put in a little white Daisy.  The Gerbera Daisy was original.  The purple flowers resembled violets but were some other kind of flower of which I don't know the name.

Heisler Park View (Laguna)

This is a view from one of the bluffs at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, CA.  I used a combination of brushwork and palette knife to combine smooth areas with very textured areas.  I'm getting ready for the Art A Fair show with the opening night on the 25th  by invitation only and the 27th when we open to the public.  If you would like a Pass, call me at 714-271-1135.

SUNFLOWER MORNING - SOLD

I painted this from a picture I took a few years ago of some sunflowers we grew in the backyard.  They were the biggest ever and the birds loved the seeds once the flowers were done.  I've tried to grow some since then without the same luck.  I think I will try again!

SOUTH LAGUNA (MONTAGE)

I know this looks familiar as it is from my previous painting "A Quiet Day in Laguna".  I used that painting as a study to do this larger one which is 16 x 20.  I wanted to make the flowers more a part of the picture as the plantings along the bluff are always perfect.  This takes me where I like to be....

COPPER PLATED PEARS

I'm in the process of starting to prepare for my summer painting classes at Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach.  I primarily teach palette knife work with an underpainting done with brushes and this is done to establish your value pattern (pattern of lights and darks).  Palette knife is such fun because the color stays so clean and it can almost be sculpted when you have enough paint on the canvas.  I'll be teaching on Tuesdays.  The first class will be July 1st.  For information, call 714-271-1135 or to make a reservation, call 949-494-4514.

QUIET DAY IN LAGUNA

I just re-posted this after discovering my mistakes.  The sand in the closer coves was too white and I wanted the focal point to be out at the far beach.  Hopefully this accomplished the task.  Anyway, this is at Treasure Island at the Montage Hotel in So. Laguna Beach.  It is a beautiful place and the walkway along the bluffs is always gorgeous.  The water changes every day depending on the weather.  It can be very peaceful but on weekends and Holidays it gets very busy.  Parking is the worst problem.  To get there, take Pacific Coast Highway through the busy park of Laguna and continue on for about a mile? until you come to a street called Wesley.  Make a right and go down the driveway to a small garage where there is paid parking-- People are always coming and going so if you wait long enough a spot will turn up.

This painting is from one of my photographs at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, CA.  I used to go there to paint frequently, but haven't been for a while as I've been concentrating more on still life paintings.
This got me excited again to do some more plain air so will get back into that venue for a while.  It's always nice to shake things up a bit--change is good!

ALISON'S CARROTS-Sold

A dear friend of mine's daughter grew these in her garden.  She sent a photograph of the carrots to her Mother who then sent it to me.  I was so taken with it (they looked so fresh and yummy) that I asked and was granted permission to paint them.  I think they look good enough to eat!  Makes me want to start a garden (oh for more time).  This morning my computer was hacked and I've spent the day trying to change passwords.  All my emails and folders are gone.... This is a re-post as there were some technical difficulties.  The inspiration for this painting came from an evening at Laguna Beach where I was treated to a beautiful sunset.  I took several photos to work from but they were somewhat disappointing.  I've used my memory of the evening to create this sunset.  Aren't beautiful sunsets wonderful!

More of my Nasturtiums that I simply put in a little white pot.  Their colors are so vibrant that they can almost light up a room.  They actually last quite a while so make it somewhat easier to paint them.  I enjoyed using a different palette this time getting into the golds and browns.  I like it and think I will incorporate those colors more frequently.

PURPLES AND WHITES

The bank out in front of our home is covered with these African Daisies.  They bloom their hearts out this time of year and really serve to beautify the entrance to our home.  I'd never painted them before but in my search for subject matter I thought they would make a pretty grouping.  Hope you agree.

I've been working at loosening up my brushstrokes and was pleased with the effort on this one.  For those of you who paint,  don't skip the preliminaries of at least working out a thumb nail value sketch and make sure you join the light middle values with the same and the darker middle values with the same.  Then add a small amount of the lightest light and darkest dark values.  Don't forget to consider the focal area.   I know we are always eager to jump right in and paint, but every time I do I end up having to work out problems that I could have avoided by pre-planning.

DAISIES IN BLUE

I just planted a small daisy plant out among my roses.  I had purchased the plant a year ago at Trader Joe's and it survived in it's little pot for almost a year, but it was looking poorly.  In just one short week after re-planting it has revived but not to the extent of the daisies in my painting.  However, that little plant was the inspiration.   I have to admit, I cheated.  I bought some silk daisies at Michaels for more inspiration.  Actually using silk flowers was kind of nice as they didn't die on me,  but the real thing is always more beautiful.  The blue jar is one of the Ball canning jars.

FLORAL TEAPOT-SOLD

This is another attempt at painting my recently re-discovered copper teapot.  I wish my Mom who gave it to me was here to see my paintings of the teapot.  The year she gave the teapot to me I had unknowingly just purchased another copper teapot right before Christmas.  It wasn't as nice as hers, but it did kind of take away from her surprise.  She should know her teapot has long outlived the other one and has become lots of fun to paint.  The flowers are from Trader Joe's and the cream pitcher was from Avon long ago.

COPPER AND CREAM

The copper teapot had been hidden away in a cupboard until I stumbled upon it the other day.  I really enjoy painting copper so was delighted to find it.  My Mother gave it to me for Christmas a number of years ago and it had kind of sunk into oblivion since I drink coffee instead of tea and of course the microwave is the best way to heat the water in a hurry.

I have been side-tracked recently doing some mixed media acrylic work and it felt so good to get back to my oils.  I've been striving for a looser look in my painting and am hopeful that I am off in the right direction--finally!

WE'RE A COUPLE

These lilies were part of a bouquet I found at Trader Joe's.  They seemed to belong together even though they were on different stems (sort of like people?).  The jar is a Ball canning jar that I found at Stater Brothers.  In Dreama Tolle Perry's blog,  she often paints blue canning jars in her beautiful paintings and I was so happy to find some (had to buy six).  So, if I break one or two I'll still be set!  This was painted with a combination of brush and palette knife.

SUNFLOWER EXPLOSION

I've always loved painting sunflowers and they seem particularly conducive to palette knife painting.  This one has lots of nice juicy texture.  As a suggestion to any oil painters out there, palette knife painting helps separate us from photographers even more because of the texture we can create.  Lots of fun!!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We had 10 guests so it was a lot of work, but fortunately everything came off very well.  My son deep fries the turkey and it was yummy!  We were supposed to have rain, but we got lucky and it waited until early this morning.

GREEN PASTURES - SOLD

My painting of the horses is from a Challenge offered by Lee Brown Photography and I have to thank him for offering up such a lovely photo to work from.  I basically used the photo with a few changes to the background (left out the fence) and I changed the horses legs slightly.  I owned horses for most of my life and painted them a lot during one period.  They remain a true love for me and painting them is a a treat!  For a time we had a large area of our property in green pasture and it always did my heart good to see the horses out there grazing.  This scene is idyllic.

SOLO SUNFLOWER

This is a re-work.  I previously had painted the background with too much blue.  By lightening it up it became a warmer more inviting image.  Of course when you change one thing it always requires changing another so the shadow was too blue and had  to be lightened.  I'm now pleased with the final image as it feels warmer and more inviting.
If you are a painter don't hesitate to re-work images that don't quite seem right to you.  You can rub a layer of Liquin on the dry painting to restore the colors and to make the surface more accepting of the new paint.

DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES

I finished this last weekend, but just got around to posting it.  I'm doing a workshop with JOHN COSBY.   Have only done the first day, but it seems he is a wonderful teacher.

The rose actually is a Diana, Princess of Wales rose.  It is quite lovely and I enjoy it so much.  It does make me sad when I think of how much Diana would have contributed to the lives of her children, family and country had she been allowed to live.  The glass jar is actually a Ball jar, but to put the name on the front would have made it busier than I preferred.

Hope you are all having a wonderful week.  I feel truly blessed to be taking  this workshop and to be able to paint at the beach every day!!

MONSOON WEATHER

DAY 30 OF THE 30 IN 30 LESLIE SAETA CHALLENGE--(To be honest I only painted 28 paintings due to technical difficulties in the beginning)

I painted this from a photograph that I took a couple of years ago.  We were staying in Scottsdale where they have the loveliest skies.  I wish we still went over there so I could take more photos of the sunsets!
I used to do a show over there that lasted for about 3 months, but I was doing mostly floral watercolors at that time  so I didn't take advantage of all the photo opportunities.  Oh well, we occasionally have beautiful skies here in So. Cal so I'll try to take advantage of them.

The Challenge has been a wonderful opportunity.  I found it very motivating to get up and get to painting so now I almost have enough paintings to fill my small bins for the Art A Fair show next summer--however, I'll be doing lots more.

NATURE'S NYMPH

DAY 29 OF THE LESLIE SAETA 30 IN 30 CHALLENGE---

This is a very old bud vase that has been in my family for as long as I can remember.  I remember as a child thinking it was very "racy".  She (the nymph) actually has a very filmy gown on but it is barely visible.  Anyway I always liked the "natural-ness" of it.  (Sorry about that word but couldn't think of another way to put it.)  It was a challenge to paint, but I rather liked the way it came out.  This one took a lot of time so I am behind the eight-ball to get another painting done for the last day of the Leslie Saeta 30 paintings in 30 days completed.  It has been a race, but well worth it!

CORK IN THE BOTTLE

This painting was done just because of the cork.  This is the bottle my son found up in the hills behind our home many years ago.  Maybe it was a soda bottle or a booze bottle, but it must be pretty old to have a cork in it.  Doesn't really look like a wine bottle???  Who knows, at any rate I've enjoyed having it and now painting it....

CARDS FOR SALE?

Cats seem to find the most unusual places to sleep.  This basket was sitting in my workroom left over from when I had note cards to sell at some shows.  Our cat, Rocky, decided to take advantage of it recently and I found him curled up and sleeping like only cats can do.  He has such unusual coloration that I've rarely painted him, but since I'm running out of ideas after having done a painting a day for so long, this seemed like a fun thing to try.

DAY 24 OF THE CHALLENGE BY LESLIE SAETA--  I offered myself a challenge of basically painting white on white.  It was difficult and not a lot of fun but at least it is recognizable as a white rose in a white hobnail vase on a white cloth (avoiding all color except for the greens).

TREASURES

I found the cream pitcher at an antique store in downtown Orange recently and the vase came from one of our families.  I guess they were once somebody's "treasure" but got passed on in one way or another.  I did a proximity of the pitcher once before but have never painted the bud vase before (always thought it would be too difficult).  Trying to find something different to paint every day has caused me to branch out and try new things.

ROSES AND COPPER-Sold

DAY 16---------

Well, we are now more than halfway through the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  It has been quite all-consuming.  Not just the painting, but the figuring out what to paint, then doing a Notan and a value study, then painting, clean-up, photograph and uploading to this site and the Leslie Saeta blog sitel  I don't know how Leslie does it with moving into her new Ventura Beach digs and all that goes along with that.

Anyway, these roses are called Floral Scent and I've painted them before.  I have trouble getting the correct color on my iPhone, so am now back to using my Cannon.  The "vase" is a glass with the Desert Rose pattern on it, but including that was going to make the painting too busy so it will have to wait for another time.  I'm finding painting roses to be quite a challenge, but think I'm getting the hang of it.

CHINA COVE STUDY - SOLD

Another painting from our trip up north to Pt. Lobos Nat'l. Park.  The area at the end of the park is called China Cove and is truly beautiful.  The water is tropical looking and the hole in the rock (upper left) is almost like a cave unless you see it from the right angle.  I painted this one with palette knife.  The painting I did previously of China Cove was also with palette knife which seems to work well with rocks and water.  I find that with palette knife I am able to get more paint down without disturbing the underlayers of paint so the color is cleaner.  I hope to learn to do this with a brush--something more to strive for...

ORANGES AND COPPER

I tried to set this image so it would automatically post at 5 am this morning, but must have done something wrong as it didn't happen.  When I just now checked in at 8 am it was still yesterday's post showing?  Ah, this technology stuff is driving me crazy!  I will persevere however...

The copper pot came back with me from France many long years ago and the bottle was found by my son, Dale, up in the hills behind our house.  It actually has a rotted cork inside of it and appears to be quite old.  I like painting still lifes, but what seems to take the most time for me is figuring out just what to paint and how I want it put together?  I've heard it is the same for other painters, too.  Seems it should be simple--just gather a few things you love together and start to paint, but it seems to be a lot more time-consuming.

DAY 10 OF THE 30-DAY PAINTING A DAY CHALLENGE

Sunsets are so much fun to paint!  It's always a challenge to get the brilliance of the sun.  It seems to happen when everything else is grayed down and there is a lot of value contrast.  I'm still trying to keep up with the Leslie Saeta 30-day challenge although I do have other challenges on the computer.  I can never seem to find the challenge for the next day.  It should be in my email, but doesn't seem to be.  Wish I was more technically inclined!  Right now I'm trying to set up "Square" to enable taking credit cards and Apple won't even accept my password.  Does anyone else have a problem with passwords??

This painting started as a "disaster" (maybe it still is?).  My husband said he liked the single rose and loved the detail.  After that it (the rose)became "precious".  I had to go back to the words of my wonderful watercolor teacher of long ago, Robert E. Wood.  "Nothing is ever precious in your painting, you have to be prepared to wipe it out if it doesn't work even though it may be the most beautiful piece of paint in your painting."  So, I didn't wipe it out but did loosen it up a lot and worked the background around it.  --Another no, no, as I should have worked it all together.  Ah well, I'm happy with it now and hope someone else will be too.

YELLOW AND BLUE

FOURTH PAINTING FOR THE 30 IN 30 CHALLENGE--TWO DAYS BEHIND!
One of my favorite subjects.  Sunflowers just seem to brighten up any day--not that today needs brightening!  This one is done with a combination of brush and palette knife.  Fun to do.

SANDPIPER

Original Oil: 6 x 6
Price:  $60 plus tax and shipping

One lone Sandpiper was darting around on the rocks and the beach.  Normally I've seen them in groups so I guess he was a loner.  I was able to photograph him with the wave behind him since he virtually blended in with the rocks (guess that's done on purpose!).  I did one other painting with a group of them feeding on the beach and called it "Suppertime".  Decided to just call this one what it is--Sandpiper.
