INGRID BERGMAN BURGUNDY ROSES
This rosebush was acquired by me by mistake, but has turned out to be one of the best. I went to the nursery and asked for an American Beauty rose (bare root) and was given a plant. I came home and prepared a wonderful spot for it using wire screening (we have moles and gophers) and proceeded to wait for the blooms. It succeeded beautifully in blooming its little heart out. That fall when I pruned it back I got down close to the root ball and looked at the tag and lo and behold it said "Ingrid Bergman". Oh well, they are much like American Beauty and it has continued through the years to perform like a champion. I remember Ingrid Bergman the actress and she was beautiful, too, although much scorned here in the U.S. at that time as she was having an affair with.....help me here, was it Roberto Rosselini?? That goes way back to a different time!!

GOLDEN GATE-SOLD
This imagery came from a photo taken by my daughter. She took the photo from a bike trail. She was on a vacation with her soon to be husband and they had a wonderful time in S. F.
I lived there long ago for a while in Pacific Heights, and later on Nob Hill and then Russian Hill.
I had a view of the Golden Gate from the Russian Hill apartment. Good times!
The upper image is a more recent painting in a larger size done from the small lower study.

PIANO CAT-SOLD
Our cat, Rocky, loves to sit on our piano and look out the window--I'm sure he lives to catch sight of a bird or a bunny rabbit. He hasn't done great things for the finish of our piano as he has been doing this for years, but guess that's the price we pay for letting him have some fun. We just placed another table that is lower right in front of the window so we're hoping this will help. Actually, since none of us play the piano I guess it is nice that it has served some purpose through the years. Bill's Mother was a very accomplished pianist and we inherited the piano from her. I'm sure she would roll over in her grave if she knew this was the purpose her piano had been reduced to.

PURE PLEASURE
I called this painting Pure Pleasure as it was a pure pleasure to paint it. I had previously done a smaller study on location called One Duck and shown earlier in my blog. I then used it to enlarge this at the same location (Irvine Park in Orange County, CA). I paint here often and also enjoy going there to walk my dog (a Cairn Terrier).
I was so happy yesterday to hear that I was given a 2nd place award for the painting by the Southern California Plein Air Painters (with a nice cash award).

HENRY FONDA YELLOWS-SOLD
This is another painting of what are rapidly becoming almost my favorite roses. The rosebush is ablaze with yellow. Even at dusk it looks like there is a spotlight on it. Just amazing so how can I resist trying to paint some of them. I put them in my antique sugar bowl and decided to crop the bowl so I could emphasize the roses. The dark background makes them sing, which they almost are anyway.....(I think I can hear them?)

FRESH AS A DAISY-SOLD
These daisies were "rescued" from our Easter bouquet. Daisies are such wonderful, happy flowers and they last such a long time. I liked the contrast of the "mauvish" (I know that isn't a real word) background against the green glass jar and the touch of yellow in the heart of the flowers. It is so easy and almost compelling to get picky with all the petals, but hopefully I avoided that pitfall this time.

FIRST HENRY FONDA
This painting is of my first Henry Fonda rose of the season. They are the most beautiful yellow in the beginning, but their form and color seems to "degrade" as the summer wears on. I must go to a nursery and ask if there is anything I can do to keep them beautiful. The sugar bowl is part of an antique set that was passed down by my Dad's family. This was a most enjoyable painting to do as it kind of "rolled off the brush". Wish they were all that way, but fortunately more and more of them are!
