The Bells
I painted this recently at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano. The courtyard, visible thru the archway, also contains the entrance to the Sacristy. This was an especially busy day for the mission as it was Easter vacation for many children and they and their families came to see the mission. It's always interesting with kids when they see someone painting. You can barely have two marks on the canvas when they will say "that's beautiful!". Hopefully some of the adults out there will think so, too!

Spring at Heisler Park
Original Oil
Size: 11 x 14
While walking on the upper pathway at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, CA I spotted the pink wildflowers bravely presenting themselves from the side of the bluff. I loved the color contrast so proceeded to take my gear down onto the beach to get a good vantage point from which to paint them.

I couldn't resist calling this painting "Three Stooges" because these birds seemed to stay together and fought for the top spot on the rock. It was a beautiful day at Crystal Cove and these birds really caught my eye.

So. Laguna Bluffs
This was painted on location (mostly) in South Laguna Beach. I got there very early and was able to do a value study first to capture the shaded bluffs. Without doing a value study I find myself "following the sun" which is a problem for most plein air painters. The bluffs and ocean are always so appealing. Hope you like it.

This was done as a study for a larger painting. It definitely captured the atmosphere of the day I was there painting. This area is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in Southern Calif.

Friends
As you may have noticed by now, I love animals!! I know I'm not alone in that category, so I enjoy painting them so others can enjoy my vision of them. These two cats belonged to my son and got along (most of the time) very well. When they were looking out the window I had to wonder if they were spotting birds they would like to get after (Oh, no)or just enjoying the beauty of the day and the warm sun.

Eucalyptus Trees
These trees grow out in front of my large studio window. I love their graceful, long lines and the many varieties of greens within their leaves. However, they are very messy trees so if it was up to my husband they would be gone. There is also some aloe-type cactus that grows at the foot of the trees and when the trees shed they get all tangled up in the cactus (which has very sharp points) so it is difficult to keep it cleaned out. We live in a somewhat rural community so the white fence in the background is ranch fencing.

Riverbed
This was painted while standing in the middle of the riverbed in Irvine Park. The climb down was fairly steep and a friend (much younger) helped me down and back up with all my painting gear--I felt quite daring!! Anyway, it was a beautiful view and I was grateful for the help. This riverbed is dry most of the time. I've only heard one person say they'd seen it at one time with a lot of water in it.

Tulip Time
These tulips were beautiful when I walked thru the front door of our local nursery. They are one of my favorite flowers, but I can't grow them because we have too many moles and gophers here in rural Orange County, CA. Guess I'll just have to be satisfied with paintings of them!

Treasure
This tiny cup was my Father's when he was little. The inside is lined with a gold-like material so I'm not so sure how healthy that would be nowadays. It has a little boy's angelic face painted on the other side, but I didn't want to get too fussy with the painting so opted to paint the plain side.

Clip Clop
Last fall we were in a little town in the gold country of Calif. named Murphy's. The town is delightful and it's like stepping back in time. The gentleman in the buggy waits in town for people that want a ride in his buggy. His faithful dog sits on the seat beside him and after they have dropped someone off at a desired location they trot back into town to wait for another "fare". Dog and horse are beautiful--well fed and groomed so they made quite a picture.

Gazebo View
This is a view from Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, CA of the gazebo that almost everyone visits if they are in Laguna. Quite a few people have even gotten married there. I was painting the scene when a young lady came along and seemed enchanted with the view. I wasn't sure if she was waiting for someone or just enjoying the view and I'll never know as I got absorbed in painting and when I looked up she was gone.

Irvine Lake Boathouse
Irvine Lake in the summer is a bustle of activity. In the winter it is so serene. The most activity is a few ducks. In another month the ducks will practically take over, but for now it is quiet. I loved the placid feeling as I painted beside the water. The one lone poplar tree that had not shed it leaves yet was a bright spark of color in an otherwise "green" landscape. The few paddleboats (barely visible) were also accent colors.

Tea for One
Hello,
I've had a busy weekend. Over to Scottsdale and back in two days and now the thought of a peaceful cup of tea is very appealing. This cup is one of several left to me by my Mother. I keep them carefully guarded in my china closet, but have fun painting one or another of them once in a while. Hope you enjoy this one--care to join me for a cup of tea?

This very small pitcher is part of a collection that my Mother got from Avon many years ago. I always loved these pieces and thought the color and design were special. Lake Laguna Niguel Reflections
This is a "re-paint" of the picture I had done recently while at Lake Laguna Niguel.
It was suggested my background was not dropped back far enough and I agreed.
Thus the re-paint. I'm much happier with it now.It has a nice "watery" feel
and makes the tree look much more beautiful.

Irvine Fall Color
On a recent painting trip to Irvine Park I felt like I was "greeted" with the beautiful fall color. The trees
were just starting to lose their leaves and had turned to a brilliant gold in places. It was a remarkably beautiful day with the exception of someone out walking their dog. The dog took one look at me and started to hiss and growl. We finally figured out that it was my painting umbrella that was all new to him and he definitely didn't like it!

Laguna Niguel Lake
This was my first trip to this lake. I had no idea what I had been missing! Absolutely lovely! Anyone living in the area that hasn't already visited would love it.
I painted on a small bluff and had the place to myself until 5 fishermen came along. Fortunately they went down the bluff some distance away so I had the peaceful quiet again. Hopefully the peacefulness that I felt in this lovely spot is translated into the painting.

Lakeside

Yesterday I painted at Irvine Park which is located in Orange County, CA near my home. It was a beautiful day, unlike the day before where I had gone to paint and had to leave due to wind. This time of year at the park is wonderful--just enough leaves have fallen from the trees to allow visibility of the branches more clearly and the feeling of fall is in the air. I learned yesterday that this lake was man-made back in 1913 and was quite a novelty at that time--I can believe that!! The waterfall is created by water flowing from the body of water just beyond it which is near a boathouse. Paddle boats are for rent during the busier times of the year--sounds like fun!
The painting is 11 x 14. Let me know if you like it--quartonfineart@yahoo.com
"Country Lane"

In the spring of this year I went on a painting trip with a club I belong to (So. Calif. Plein Air Painters) to the Santa Rose Plateau. It is a beautiful preserve of land near the Temecula area. It consists of hundreds of acres of untouched land. When you are there it is easy to imagine you have stepped back in time to the virgin lands of our forefathers. This painting represents one of the many trails I walked on that day. The poppies were just starting to bloom and a feeling of spring was in the air. However, it did get darned hot later on!!!
Let me know if you are interested in this painting. It is 11 x 14. loriquarton@yahoo.com
"Mission Bougainvillea"

This painting is actually from a photo I took several years ago. At the time, my friend and I had gone to the mission to paint and it was absolutely bleak!! Then we were told the mission had been tented for termites. The photo was the only remembrance of the way it had looked before the tenting. The bougainville is coming back, but will take a little more time to make a complete recovery. It's very hardy as those of you who have dealt with it know.

Poppies of Italy

I've just returned from a painting trip to Italy in the Chianti area of Tuscany. I was in a painting workshop with Greg LaRock who is a fantastic instructor. We stayed in an old monastery that has been totally updated in San Fedele. The painting above was done the last day of the workshop at a poppy field near a small town named Pianini (sp?) There were only 5 of us including Greg and we all painted the poppy field from various locations. My view included the Italian home at the top of the hill. We had seen other poppy fields, but this one was spectacular. Such a treat! Hope you enjoy. I'll be showing my artwork at Art Affair again this summer and will have this piece there.

I frequently do reproductions of my originals in a smaller format and mat them with an archival white matboard. I then paint the mat (as I've done above) and sell the 16 x 20 size for $65.00. In this case I decided to do a large original on YUPO and paint the mat so the total size is 24 x 30.

Iris Showgirl
Sunday, July 6, 2008
I've been working on getting my summer show (Art-A-Fair) in Laguna Beach up and running.
The show runs thru July and August so any of you in the area would enjoy paying the show a visit. It's usually cooler in Laguna Beach so that's also an incentive! We are right down on the Canyon Hwy. not far from the beach and across from the Pageant of the Masters.
This painting is one I recently finished at the show. I love the feeling of the iris coming out of the shadows!
