DOS MANZANOS
I'll be teaching a palette knife painting class this summer at Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach, CA so I'm going to be working on a series of images that will suit all levels of painters. Palette knife painting is so fun since it is somewhat "plastic" in its maneuverability. With so much paint on the canvas it is easier to move edges and change things by scraping off. Come down and give it a try.

INGRID BERGMAN BURGUNDY ROSES
This rosebush was acquired by me by mistake, but has turned out to be one of the best. I went to the nursery and asked for an American Beauty rose (bare root) and was given a plant. I came home and prepared a wonderful spot for it using wire screening (we have moles and gophers) and proceeded to wait for the blooms. It succeeded beautifully in blooming its little heart out. That fall when I pruned it back I got down close to the root ball and looked at the tag and lo and behold it said "Ingrid Bergman". Oh well, they are much like American Beauty and it has continued through the years to perform like a champion. I remember Ingrid Bergman the actress and she was beautiful, too, although much scorned here in the U.S. at that time as she was having an affair with.....help me here, was it Roberto Rosselini?? That goes way back to a different time!!

GOLDEN GATE-SOLD
This imagery came from a photo taken by my daughter. She took the photo from a bike trail. She was on a vacation with her soon to be husband and they had a wonderful time in S. F.
I lived there long ago for a while in Pacific Heights, and later on Nob Hill and then Russian Hill.
I had a view of the Golden Gate from the Russian Hill apartment. Good times!
The upper image is a more recent painting in a larger size done from the small lower study.

PIANO CAT-SOLD
Our cat, Rocky, loves to sit on our piano and look out the window--I'm sure he lives to catch sight of a bird or a bunny rabbit. He hasn't done great things for the finish of our piano as he has been doing this for years, but guess that's the price we pay for letting him have some fun. We just placed another table that is lower right in front of the window so we're hoping this will help. Actually, since none of us play the piano I guess it is nice that it has served some purpose through the years. Bill's Mother was a very accomplished pianist and we inherited the piano from her. I'm sure she would roll over in her grave if she knew this was the purpose her piano had been reduced to.

PURE PLEASURE
I called this painting Pure Pleasure as it was a pure pleasure to paint it. I had previously done a smaller study on location called One Duck and shown earlier in my blog. I then used it to enlarge this at the same location (Irvine Park in Orange County, CA). I paint here often and also enjoy going there to walk my dog (a Cairn Terrier).
I was so happy yesterday to hear that I was given a 2nd place award for the painting by the Southern California Plein Air Painters (with a nice cash award).

HENRY FONDA YELLOWS-SOLD
This is another painting of what are rapidly becoming almost my favorite roses. The rosebush is ablaze with yellow. Even at dusk it looks like there is a spotlight on it. Just amazing so how can I resist trying to paint some of them. I put them in my antique sugar bowl and decided to crop the bowl so I could emphasize the roses. The dark background makes them sing, which they almost are anyway.....(I think I can hear them?)

FRESH AS A DAISY-SOLD
These daisies were "rescued" from our Easter bouquet. Daisies are such wonderful, happy flowers and they last such a long time. I liked the contrast of the "mauvish" (I know that isn't a real word) background against the green glass jar and the touch of yellow in the heart of the flowers. It is so easy and almost compelling to get picky with all the petals, but hopefully I avoided that pitfall this time.

FIRST HENRY FONDA
This painting is of my first Henry Fonda rose of the season. They are the most beautiful yellow in the beginning, but their form and color seems to "degrade" as the summer wears on. I must go to a nursery and ask if there is anything I can do to keep them beautiful. The sugar bowl is part of an antique set that was passed down by my Dad's family. This was a most enjoyable painting to do as it kind of "rolled off the brush". Wish they were all that way, but fortunately more and more of them are!

ONE DUCK - SOLD
This is another painting at Irvine Park. I have an annual pass and it is near my home so it's always very tempting. This is the small waterfall with the bridge that crosses it. It was a very peaceful afternoon with a few ducks out enjoying the quiet. I decided to include one duck, although he is not very obvious, just for fun. I didn't make him stand out as I didn't want him to be the focal point.

THE BOATHOUSE (Irvine Park)
This is my artist's interpretation of the boathouse at Irvine Park. You can rent a paddle boat and paddle around the lake with the ducks. I remember doing this long ago. WANNA PAINT - SOLD
My imagination is running rampant!! Teddy is asking someone to come paint with him. I feel the same way sometimes. It's just fun painting the chunky little black and white body of the panda. I recently checked out the panda website on Fine Art America and at least I found out that I wasn't the only one dreaming up activities for the panda. It's nice to know I'm not alone. QUIET ARRANGEMENT - SOLD
I was tempted to call this painting "14 Hands" which would refer to the bottle that has a horse's head on the label. But, for the sake of composition the horse's head ended up being a mere smudge of a reddish-brown. This was meant to be a loose painting so a very defined horse's head just wouldn't work. However, the horse was original inspiration (and I want to give him/her credit!).

BRASS AND GLASS---SOLD
This was a fun painting as most of them are, but the special part about this one was that I re-discovered the brass bowl that had long been missing. Originally I also had a brass platter that matched, but it is nowhere to be found. I love showing the transparency of glass and this container is part of a set that came from my Mom. She and my Dad had purchased a whole set of them at the Madonna Inn where they had stayed while on their way to Northern California.

TREASURE ISLAND VIEW
I guess I am in love with this view as I've painted it quite a few times. This is the largest painting I've done of the scene--it's 24 x 30 and I'm quite happy with it. This particular day was probably the most beautiful day ever. The water in the original is more turquoise but somehow I can't get that color on my monitor. The powers that be at the Montage Hotel have made it nearly impossible to go there to paint as the meters in the garage are 25 cents for every 10 minutes and there is a 3-hour time limit. I'm so glad I got to paint there on location for quite a while before these changes took place. It's the 3-hour limit that is impossible except I may just go there and paint only very small paintings--4 x 6 or 6 x 8.

HENRY FONDA ROSES--SOLD
I did this painting sometime ago but just realized I hadn't ever added it to my blog and since it is quite popular on Fine Art America I decided to add it. COPPER POT-SOLD
This is a little copper pot that I brought back from France many long years ago. It is actually a fondue pot, but hasn't been used for that in quite a while. I hadn't realized how challenging painting the handle of the pot would be. (It is still a little off.) But, I loved the shadow it cast on the background. That became the focal point. RAINY SEASON
This painting is basically a re-make of a previous painting that came out way too dark. Everyone talks about how flexible oil painting is and it certainly is compared to watercolor, but, if you get some area too dark on an oil it is impossible to get it light and bright again. The same is true of watercolor, but to a greater extent. Anyway, I always liked the painting and wanted to work it out more to my satisfaction. It all goes back to the planning! If I would have just done my homework and done the thumbnails and color studies initially, I would have been much better off! Some day I'll learn my lesson.

These three eucalyptus trees are in the front yard of my son's current home. Almost every day I take our dog over to his house to play with his dog and when I get back in my car these trees are in full view. WHITE ROSES-SOLD
My roses are loving all this heat. All I have to do is keep them watered--lots of water. This rose is the Iceberg that you see everywhere. They are so hardy and need little care. The jar is an old Ball canning jar which is always fun to paint. I've basically reverted to my regular oil paints from the water-based oils. I thought I could get along with the water based, but I switched back just to add something to a painting that I'd previously done in oils and realized how much better the regular oils are. The ease of just using water instead of turp is a great temptation, but I'm deciding not worth it.

LIFEGUARD AND FRIENDS
This was done recently with only the lifeguard, but I decided he looked far too lonely so I added a few people to the scene. The place is the view from Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. I was on the path above the beach. The stairs lead down to the beach from that part of the walk. I love painting at the beach--it's good for the soul--so calming and the sound of the waves plus the fresh air are a wonderful combination. I've recently started painting on Ampersand Gessoboard per Carol Marine's suggestion and it is a wonderful surface. If you are a painter and haven't tried it, I would highly recommend it!

SINGER-SOLD
www.loriquarton.comA friend of mine owned an old Singer sewing machine which had belonged to her Grandmother and then her Mother. She decided she didn't have room for it anymore and it was not in good condition so she was just going to put it out on the curb for the trash people or whomever came along. I told her I'd try to sell it for her on ebay, but only got a couple of calls. In the meantime I really wanted it, but didn't see a place for it to fit in our home. However, when one of the interested parties came over they wanted to cut a hole in the top of it to make a different "working" sewing machine fit. I couldn't stand the idea so virtually talked them out of it and decided to keep it and refinish it myself. It was a huge job, but came out beautifully--maybe I should go into that business? We found a perfect spot for it in the corner of our bedroom so I enjoy it every day. Now all the other pieces of furniture in our home that could stand refinishing are "staring" at me. Uh oh!!! Not right away!

FAVORITE VASE
The vase was a gift from my daughter a few years ago. It was made by one of the artists at Art A Fair and I had admired it when my daughter was at the show. So, I received it later as a present. I love it but was sad when I realized that because it was raku it wouldn't hold water. I have managed to over come the problem with some difficulty a couple of times by stuffing a heavy plastic bag into it to hold the water. However, it works better as part of a painting!

I know, this was already on my blog, but I inadvertently deleted it when trying to upload the new (hopefully improved) version of it. As a change of pace I've been enjoying switching back and forth between realism and abstraction. Sunflower Pumpkin-SOLD
I started this painting at Dana Cooper's workshop on Lido Isle. Came home and decided to make a few changes so went out and purchased my own pumpkin and a mini-sunflower plant. Sunflowers are fun to paint (such happy flowers!) and it was fun working in the fall theme with the pumpkin (Dana's idea). I worked on this image in PhotoShop, but really couldn't get it to be as beautiful as the original.
Sometimes I think the photos look better after using Photo shop and I have to tone them down, but couldn't seem to get the saturation and sparkle with this one.
